National Couples Day is a chance to celebrate love and quality time with your partner. But having a memorable date does not mean you need to spend a fortune.

Whether you are newly dating, married or have been together for years, there are plenty of affordable ways to enjoy each other’s company. Here are eight budget-friendly date ideas for South African couples.

1. Have a picnic at a local park

Pack sandwiches, fruit, snacks and your favourite drinks and head to a nearby park. A picnic can be as simple or elaborate as you want, and you can turn it into an afternoon of conversation, games and relaxation.

Check whether your chosen park allows picnics and whether there are any entry or parking fees before you go.

2. Explore your city on foot

You do not need an expensive itinerary to discover somewhere new. Pick a neighbourhood, waterfront, market or public space you have not explored together and spend the day walking around.

Take photos, browse local shops and stop for an affordable snack along the way.

3. Cook dinner together

Skip the restaurant and turn your kitchen into your own date-night destination. Choose a recipe neither of you has tried before, shop for affordable ingredients and cook together.

You can make the evening more special by dressing up, playing music and setting the table as if you were at a restaurant.

4. Have a movie night at home

A cinema date can quickly become expensive once you add tickets, snacks and transport. Instead, choose a few favourite films, make popcorn and create a comfortable movie-night setup at home.

You could even give the evening a theme, such as South African movies, romantic comedies or films from the year you met.

5. Visit a free or low-cost attraction

South Africa has plenty of museums, galleries, markets, gardens and public spaces that are free or relatively inexpensive to visit.

Research attractions in your area and look out for free-entry days or discounted events. This gives you something new to experience without putting too much pressure on your budget.

6. Have a games night

Bring out the board games, playing cards or even a couple of competitive mobile games. If you do not own any games, create your own challenges or trivia quiz.

Add inexpensive snacks and make a little competition out of it. The winner could get to choose the next date.

7. Watch the sunset together

Find a safe spot with a good view and watch the sunset together. Pack some snacks or takeaway coffee and spend some uninterrupted time talking.

It is a simple idea, but sometimes the most memorable dates are the ones that allow couples to slow down and enjoy each other’s company.

8. Plan a DIY spa night

You do not need to book an expensive spa treatment to enjoy some relaxation. Create your own spa evening at home with affordable face masks, moisturiser, candles and relaxing music.

Take turns giving each other massages, put away your phones and use the evening to unwind together.

It’s about the time spent together

National Couples Day does not have to involve expensive gifts or luxury experiences. Spending quality time together, trying something different and being present with each other can make an ordinary day feel special.

The best date is ultimately one that fits your relationship and your budget.
