Helpful steps to prevent flu this winter

Winter often brings a rise in flu cases, making it essential to take proactive measures to protect yourself and others. Here are effective steps to reduce the risk of catching or spreading the flu this season.

Get vaccinated

Receiving the annual flu vaccine is the most reliable way to prevent influenza. It helps your immune system recognise and fight the virus, reducing the severity and likelihood of infection.

Practice good hygiene

Flu viruses spread easily through droplets from coughs or sneezes and by touching contaminated surfaces. To minimise this:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use hand sanitiser when soap isn’t available.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Maintain social distance and wear masks

In crowded or enclosed spaces, keeping a safe distance from others and wearing a mask can significantly reduce the risk of airborne transmission.

Strengthen your immune system

Supporting your body’s defences can help fight off infections. Ensure you:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
  • Get regular exercise and sufficient sleep.
  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques.

Keep your environment clean

Regularly disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices to limit virus spread.

Stay home when sick

If you experience flu symptoms like fever, cough, or body aches, stay home to avoid infecting others and seek medical advice if necessary.

By following these steps, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of flu infection and contribute to a healthier winter season for yourself and those around you.
