A routine celebrated for its promise of heightened productivity and mental clarity can be especially challenging to maintain during the winter months.

With shorter days, colder temperatures and the lure of extra sleep, it can disrupt early rising habits. However, with intentional strategies, it is possible to maintain momentum and reap the benefits of an early start, regardless of the season.

There are some days, especially in the beginning, when you may feel like not waking up and just simply switch off the alarm and continue with your sleep.

According to Glamour magazine, here are a few tips to help you continue your 5 a.m. club routine in winter.

1. Create a cosy wake-up environment

Winter mornings are harsh, so preparing a warm and inviting space to wake up in makes a significant difference.

Use a soft robe, slippers and adjust your thermostat to ensure comfort. Consider using a sunrise alarm clock that gradually brightens, simulating natural dawn and easing the transition from sleep to wakefulness.

2. Adjust your evening routine

Since daylight fades earlier in winter, shift your evening rituals to promote better sleep quality. Reduce screen exposure an hour before bed, engage in calming activities like reading or meditation, and maintain a consistent bedtime that supports waking at 5 am without sacrificing rest.

3. Plan motivating morning activities

Design your early hours with purposeful and enjoyable tasks that inspire you to get up. Whether it’s light exercise, creative work or mindful journaling, having a clear motivation can help overcome the temptation to stay under the covers.

4. Dress in layers and prepare ahead

Lay out your workout clothes or work attire the night before to minimise friction in the morning. Wearing layers can also help you adjust to the cold quickly, making the process of leaving bed less daunting.

5. Stay consistent and patient

Consistency is key to sustaining the 5 am Club habit. Even on days when motivation wanes, sticking to the routine helps reinforce the habit. Allow yourself grace during tough mornings and reflect on the benefits you’ve gained to stay motivated.

Winter’s challenges are real, but they need not derail your commitment to the 5 am Club. By adapting your environment, routines, and mindset, you can transform those early hours into a time of productivity and peace, no matter the season.
