Media personality and actor Somizi Mhlongo took to his social media to share his views on the announcement made regarding the issuing of a lockdown in the Kempton Park area amid the investigation of serial murders.

“Why can’t it be a normal thing for crime not to exist?”
The Metro FM radio presenter posted a video on TikTok, where he shared that he has an issue with the lockdown of the Kempton Park area. He critiqued the timing of the police and asked the imperative question: “Why must there be one person dying, never mind we are on eight now, for action to be taken?”
Seemingly upset, Somizi shared his lack of impression of the reaction of the police to the killings that are happening in the East Rand. He asks again, “Why can’t it be a normal thing for crime not to exist?”
He ended the video on a sombre note, sharing how defeated he felt and imagined how South African women feel.

He echoed the emotions of many South Africans, with some commenting on their personal stories of being failed by the police. Others agreed with him, stating more needs to be done. Women also thanked Somizi for speaking up for them, and others shared their own views on the matter.
Kempton Park lockdown
Premier of South Africa’s Gauteng province Panyaza Lesufi declared that a full-scale security lockdown in Kempton Park, located within the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area in the East Rand, on 16 September 2026, with aims to follow critical leads into the serial killings of women in the area.
