In a recent interview, South African icon Somizi Mhlongo reflected on lessons he learned from his previous marriage to Mohale Motaung, which only lasted nine months. What seemed like a whirlwind romance quickly dissipated shortly after their lavish wedding a few years ago.

“Don’t ignore red flags”

The Sarafina! star appeared on a podcast episode with L-Tido, where the two discussed life, love, and the actor’s career over the years. During the episode, Somizi reluctantly shared his experience of being married. He said he would not mention his ex-husband’s name or go into detail about their relationship.

However, he did share a few pearls of wisdom. The former Idols SA judge shared that you need to marry your type “both financially and emotionally.”

“Don’t ignore red flags. See them for what they are,” he shared.

Somizi on getting married again

The veteran actor is enthusiastic about the possibility of getting married again, sharing that his type is someone who is “financially fluid.” At this stage in his life, Somizi explained that he needs a partner to maintain themselves both financially and emotionally. The South African icon added that he is at a point where he can no longer compromise his own lifestyle for a relationship.

Physically, he is not particular, but he does share that he would love a “rich, kind man.”

Somizi and Mohale Motaung’s relationship

Somizi and internet personality Mohale were a notable couple back in 2019, a beautiful representation of queer love. The age-gap couple stirred controversy over their age and finances, with many accusing Mohale of being a gold digger after they shared their relationship publicly.

The two met in 2017 when Mohale attended the book launch of Somizi’s memoir Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit. The couple then began a whirlwind romance that led them down the aisle after two years of dating.

Somizi and his ex-husband threw a lavish wedding that was documented on the South African streaming service Showmax. However, their marriage soon came to an end a few months later.
