Internet reacts as Anele Mdoda shares throwback pic of son at Monaco Grand Prix

South African media personality Anele Mgudlwa, better known as Anele Mdoda, has once again got social media talking after sharing a throwback photo of her son at the Monaco Grand Prix.

The radio host and television presenter posted the image on X (formerly Twitter), showing her son sitting beside the famous Monaco harbour with luxury buildings in the background. Anele shared that the picture was taken during the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix.

The post was in response to a tweet which stated that Africans on X (formerly Twitter) didn’t know about the Monaco Grand Prix until recently.

In the post, she jokingly replied: “Hi, African here. Attached is a photo of my son at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2016. Your understanding in this matter is greatly appreciated.”

Social media reacts to viral Monaco Grand Prix debate 

The light-hearted clapback quickly gained traction, with many users praising Anele’s sense of humour while others pointed out that Formula 1 has long enjoyed a dedicated following across Africa.

Many social media users also shared their own memories of watching Formula 1 races growing up, while others celebrated Anele for reminding people that Africans have diverse interests and experiences that extend far beyond common stereotypes.

“Lol you just mopped the floor with him. Why do they think that Africans are that behind?” wondered an X user.

“Now this is next level flex,” added another.

Fans love the throwback moment

Beyond the online debate, many followers were drawn to the adorable image itself. The throwback photo offered a rare glimpse into Anele’s personal life and highlighted a special family moment from nearly a decade ago.

“Your son has been living my dream life since birth,” commented one X user.

Sharing similar sentiments, another added, “Like Khaya Dhlanga once said ‘when I grow up I want to be like Alakhe’.”
