Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela has apologised and withdrawn statements and allegations he made to several media houses following the recent court proceedings involving suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

In a statement, Azwihangwi said he had reflected on his media engagement and, after consulting with others, decided to withdraw the remarks.
Bishop Maumela says he should have shown greater sensitivity
Azwihangwi acknowledged that he should have handled the matter differently, particularly because the case involves a minor.
The bishop said he recognised, after receiving advice from people who engaged with him, that he should have exercised greater restraint and responsibility when speaking to the media.
“I therefore unreservedly withdraw the statements I made and sincerely apologise to anyone who may have been affected or offended by my words.”
Remarks about President and law enforcement withdrawn
Azwihangwi also specifically withdrew remarks he had made concerning the President, law enforcement agencies and the Mandlanga Commission.
He stressed that he did not intend to threaten, harm or intimidate anyone, adding, “I accept full responsibility for the manner in which I handled the media engagement and sincerely apologise for my conduct.”

Bishop Maumela reflects on his comments
In his statement, Azwihangwi invoked the words of former President Nelson Mandela, saying the moment had allowed him to reflect on his actions and learn from them.
He quoted Mandela as saying: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”
Azwihangwi said he wants to use the experience to contribute to more responsible and constructive public discourse.
Refraining from further public comments
The bishop also said he would no longer make public comments about the matter and would allow the relevant legal and investigative processes to continue.
“Going forward, I will refrain from making further public comments on this matter and allow the appropriate processes to take their course.”
He thanked those who had counselled and guided him following his media comments, saying he respected the advice he had received.
Azwihangwi concluded by acknowledging the importance of restraint, responsibility and respect for due process when dealing with sensitive matters. “I sincerely apologise and thank everyone who has counselled and guided me.”

Shadrack Sibiya case continues
Shadrack remains in custody following his appearance in court and is expected to return for a formal bail application on 29 September 2026.
He faces charges including rape, trafficking in persons and sexual grooming. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
Azwihangwi’s withdrawal comes as the case continues through the legal process, with the bishop now saying he will refrain from further public commentary and allow the appropriate authorities and courts to deal with the matter.
