Condolences pour in following Morgan Tsvangirai’s death

by Bridgette Matjuda

The founder and president of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai has died at the age of 65. Even though he was active in politics until his last breath, he lost his long battle with colon cancer last night. The MDC was the opposition party to Zimbabwe’s ruling party ZANU-PF.

A courageous man, a #democrat, a leader, voice of the voiceless, #selfless, servant of the people & a true patriot. He was tortured, falsely accused even for treason, this is a man who stood for people’s #rights & lost his life in the process. #Hero #RIPMorganTsvangirai

Year 2007 as young reporter I interviewed #Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai who would later be Prime minister in 2009. He was in Uganda for the The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting hosted by Uganda- the famous chogm that ate all the money at the time. Tsvangirai succumbed to colon cancer at the age of 65 in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a friend said it’s cruel irony that he has been outlived by former president Mugabe who was forced out of power barely three months ago. Tsvangirai died on same day adamant Jacob Zuma was forced to leave South African presidency. It’s the end of an era for Zimbabweans. My friend Farai Mwakutuya says it best. “Beaten up, arrested, harassed, ridiculed, insulted, falsely accused, but never silenced! …The people’s hero!” Thank you for the music and the fight! Rest well! #RIPMorganTsvangirai

Heartbroken????? We have lost a Father. I had an opportunity to meet with this humble and down to earth man who kept referring to me as “Amai” RIP. You fought a good battle #zimbabwe #RIPmorgantsvangirai

I am heartbroken tonight.. Morgan Tsvangirai.. I remember years in Zimbabwe where you tried three times to remove Mugabe from power and fought through beatings and jail for democracy for us all. Thank you for making me believe that change is actually possible, and that we can show courage & fight for it. Sir, you are surely in heaven and no longer in pain. May you Rest In Peace! ? ?? ———————————————————————— #LaurasWorld #Zimbabwe #RIPMorganTsvangirai #MorganTsvangirai

Go well General #RIPMorganTsvangirai yours was a world full of broken promises and loneliness in the end. You have left many orphans but given hope to many in equal measure
