Cooking tips from celebrity chef Siphokazi Mdlankomo

by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Former Eastern Cape domestic worker and 2014 Master Chef runner-up, Siphokazi Mdlankomo has unique creativity and style in the art of cooking. Our food editor Ntwenhle Gcabashe caught up with to chat about her life and food style.

  • What three words describe you? Honest, caring, go-getter.
  • What motivates you? My achievements, which include being a brand ambassador for two big names – Pick n Pay and Royco. I also have a cookbook and a TV show (which I just started shooting). I have learnt to stay positive, no matter what challenges I face.
  • What would you say to those who look up to you? Never lose hope, keeping pushing and knock on all doors; one will ultimately open. Go get your dream because no one will bring it to you
  • Where do you see yourself in three years? Owning a cooking school, which will enable me to assist those in need of basic culinary skills, such as domestic workers. I also want to do more cooking shows that will be aired around the world.
  • How do you describe your cooking style? Simple, but mouth-watering and tantalising. It’s a cross between African culture and modern recipes. Anyone can afford the recipes my cookbook, My Little Black Recipe Book.
