From Kraaifontein to the main stage: How Big Meg is redefining South African entertainment

For 21-year-old Kraaifontein native Chesrae Megan, better known to her massive digital following as Big Meg, creativity has never been about fitting into a single box.

As a dynamic South African content creator, rapper, and multi-faceted entertainer with over 1.1 million followers across her main platforms, Megan has built a career by constantly pushing boundaries, experimenting with diverse creative spaces, and challenging public expectations.

Whether she is dominating the digital landscape, dropping bars in the recording studio, or turning red carpets into theatrical masterclasses, Megan is proving that modern South African stardom belongs to those who refuse to be categorised.

Mastering the art of theatrical storytelling

Megan recently sent shockwaves across South African social media and major headlines with her show-stopping appearance at the Content Creator Awards, where she debuted a striking concept titled “BIG MEG IN MOURNING: THE FUNERAL OF THE OPPONENTS.”

Clad in a dramatic black gown and veil, the visionary creator turned her red-carpet moment into a deliberate narrative statement.

“The concept was very intentional. I didn’t just want to wear a beautiful outfit to the awards; I wanted to make a statement,” Megan explains, detailing how the striking ensemble symbolised mourning the competition rather than a personal loss.

“Seeing the reaction online was honestly amazing because people didn’t really understand the concept, leaving them with think pieces. I love that I could create a conversation and have them wonder what every detail means.”

Rather than treating fashion as an afterthought, Megan approaches it as an extension of her storytelling, crafting characters and inviting her audience to decode the deeper meaning behind her aesthetic choices.

Transitioning from passion to a powerhouse brand

Reaching over 1.1 million followers is no small feat, but Megan’s ascent from a small-scale creator into a prominent cultural figure was built on gradual consistency and a vital mindset shift.

“I went from simply creating because I enjoyed it to understanding that what I was building had real value,” she reflects.

“I stopped seeing content creation as something I was just doing and started treating it as a business and a career. That meant taking my creativity seriously, being intentional about my brand, and understanding that consistency is just as important as talent.”

Despite explosive audience growth, Megan remains deeply grounded in her original voice, balancing the demands of a diverse digital community without losing her distinct personality.

“My audience has grown, and naturally, I’ve grown too. I’m constantly exploring new ideas… But the foundation remains the same: my personality, my humour, my confidence, and my ability to be unapologetically myself,” she shares. “I want people to grow with me, not watch me become someone else just to keep them entertained.”

Bridging music, content, and legacy

As both a skilled rapper and a dominant digital personality, Megan effortlessly bridges the gap between music and digital entertainment. For her, the two mediums feed into each other while serving different emotional purposes.

“Content creation has helped me develop my personality in front of an audience, understand entertainment, and recognise what makes people connect with something,” she notes. “Music allows me to express another side of myself. It’s where I can be more vulnerable, confident, outspoken, and experimental.”

Looking ahead, Megan is far from resting on her milestones. With her eyes set firmly on expanding her footprint as a multilingual music artist and exploring larger-scale fashion collaborations, she is building an empire that extends far beyond viral moments and algorithmic reach.

“I want to build something that lasts beyond algorithms and follower counts,” Megan concludes. “I want to create opportunities, inspire other young creatives, and leave a legacy that people can associate with originality, fearlessness, and breaking boundaries.”
