Special Election Day voting opens today to tomorrow

Special voting across South Africa has officially commenced today, Monday, 2 November 2026, marking the crucial first phase of the national electoral process.

Running strictly over two days through tomorrow, Tuesday, 3 November 2026, special voting provides an essential window for registered citizens who are unable to travel to their designated voting stations on the main election day to cast their ballots early and exercise their democratic right.

Understanding special voting: Who qualifies and how it works

Designed to ensure complete electoral inclusivity, special voting accommodates two primary categories of registered voters. The first category includes voters who are physically unable to travel to a voting district due to infirmity, advanced age, physical disability, or pregnancy. For these individuals, home visits are conducted by official Electoral Commission (IEC) staff to safely collect their ballots.

The second category encompasses registered voters, including election officials, security personnel, media workers, and citizens who will be out of their voting districts on main polling day, who applied in advance to cast their vote early at their designated voting station. Both streams operate under strict security protocols to guarantee that every single vote is safely recorded and sealed prior to general counting.

Key information and essential tips for special voters

For those participating in special voting today and tomorrow, holding the correct documentation is mandatory. Every special voter must present their original barcoded South African ID book, smart ID card, or a valid temporary identity certificate at their registered voting station or during a home visit.

Voters visiting stations are advised to arrive early during official operational hours, confirm their registration status beforehand, and follow all procedural guidelines set out by election officials.

With special voting concluding on Tuesday afternoon, all remaining registered South Africans are reminded that general voting day will officially take place nationwide this Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
