South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile resumes ANC campaign trail ahead of municipal polls

African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President Paul Mashatile has officially returned to active political campaigning, marking a high-profile re-entry ahead of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.

Following a brief period away due to health concerns, Mashatile hit the ground running in Gauteng, leading a rigorous door-to-door blitz in Ivory Park. His return injects heavy momentum into the ruling party’s electoral machinery as political organisations across the country enter the final weeks of intense municipal campaigning.

Hitting the ground in Ivory Park

During his visit to Ivory Park, Mashatile engaged directly with residents, volunteers, and regional party structures to assess service delivery bottlenecks and rally community support.

Ground engagements focused heavily on persistent municipal challenges, including inadequate housing, irregular water supply, electricity interruptions, and sanitation backlogs.

While community members expressed frustration over lagging development and enduring infrastructure deficits, Mashatile acknowledged the severity of the grievances, conceding that systemic problems require sustained, collaborative intervention rather than quick campaign fixes.

Rebuilding trust at the grassroots level

The leadership’s decision to touch down in densely populated urban settlements like Ivory Park underscores a broader tactical shift for the governing party. With local government dynamics heavily influenced by visible municipal failures, top officials are being deployed to face constituents directly rather than relying on rallies alone.

During walkabouts through local wards, Mashatile stressed that the ANC’s renewal depends heavily on revitalising active branch networks that are responsive to everyday community needs. Party strategists recognise that restoring voter confidence in metropolitan areas and townships requires transparent dialogue regarding electricity grids, billing system errors, and localised infrastructure decay.

Navigating a contested electoral landscape

The Deputy President’s return comes at a critical juncture as the ANC attempts to shore up support in key metropolitan and local municipalities amid stiff political competition.

Opposition parties have ramped up their own provincial drives, with structures from ActionSA emphasising rigorous local accountability and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) aggressively pushing their candidate slates in urban townships.

As billboards bearing the ANC’s message of building better communities together line provincial roadways, leadership’s immediate challenge remains converting voter fatigue into renewed electoral confidence before ballots open in November.
