Impulse buying can become a problem if not checked, especially with the easy access that online stores provide. Groceries arrive within 60 minutes of ordering; some stores offer next-day delivery, and there are many stores to choose from.

Impulse buying and overspending then become a strong possibility.
To avoid adding more strain to your finances than needed, here are a few tips to avoid impulse buying online.
1. Question the emotion behind the purchase
- Do I need this, or am I trying to change how I feel?
- Would I still want it tomorrow?
- What practical value will it add?
- Will I feel comfortable with the cost after the excitement wears off?
2. Create inconveniences when checking out
Remove one of the most appealing aspects of online buying: convenience. The University of Utah suggests disconnecting your card/payment method from your smart devices.
“Make it so that you have to physically input payment information before making the purchase. Adding more steps to the process may help deter you from making the unplanned purchase,” they suggest.
The university also suggests deleting online store apps from your phone and unsubscribing from promotional emails.

3. Try the 48-hour rule
“You feel a thrill when you spot a new product or a good deal. But after the emotion has faded away, do you want it just as much?” asked the United Nations Federal Credit Union.
Waiting 48 hours after spotting an item may reduce impulse buying by clarifying whether you really want or need the item or if you were just excited.
4. Account for fun
When jotting down your monthly budget, allocate an amount for frivolous spending and use that allocated amount to spend on impulse buys, thus limiting the habit.
