Simple strategies to make multitasking work for you

Modern life rarely leaves room for doing just one thing at a time. Between work deadlines, family commitments, messages and everyday errands, multitasking can feel unavoidable.

But research shows that constantly switching between demanding tasks can reduce efficiency and increase errors. According to The Mindspa Institute, the answer isn’t always to eliminate multitasking, but to become more strategic about it.

Pair the right tasks

The key to effective multitasking is combining activities that use different types of attention. For example, listen to a podcast while preparing dinner, or make a phone call during a walk.

Avoid pairing two mentally demanding activities, such as answering emails while writing an important report. Complex tasks are particularly vulnerable to the time costs associated with switching attention.

Batch similar tasks together

Rather than jumping between emails, social media and work throughout the day, group similar activities into dedicated periods.

Set aside time to answer messages, make calls or complete administrative tasks. Batching reduces unnecessary switching and helps you maintain momentum.

Protect your focus

Not every notification deserves an immediate response. Next Big Idea Club recommends turning off non-essential alerts, silencing your phone during focused work and closing unnecessary browser tabs.

Research has found that interruptions and self-interruptions can undermine concentration and productivity.

Know when to single-task

Some activities deserve your full attention. Driving, studying, strategic work and important conversations should not compete with notifications or secondary tasks. Think of multitasking as a tool to use selectively, rather than a productivity badge.

Ultimately, effective multitasking is less about doing everything simultaneously and more about managing your attention intelligently.

Choose compatible tasks, batch distractions and give demanding work the uninterrupted focus it deserves.
