Mohau Nkota returns to Orlando Pirates on season-long loan

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the return of exciting winger Mohau Nkota, with the South African international rejoining the Buccaneers on a season-long loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

The 21-year-old’s return was announced yesterday, 3 September 2026, bringing him back to Soweto just over a year after he left Pirates for Saudi Arabia.

Both clubs confirmed the loan agreement, with Pirates welcoming the attacker back to the club. 

Mohau Nkota returns to familiar surroundings

Nkota became one of the most promising young attackers in South African football during his breakthrough 2024/25 campaign with Pirates. 

EWN reports that, after progressing through the club’s development structures, he established himself in the first team and made a significant impact, finishing the season with 39 appearances, seven goals and five assists across competitions. His performances in the CAF Champions League were particularly impressive, with four goals and two assists in nine matches as Pirates reached the semi-finals. 

His form also earned him recognition at the international level with Bafana Bafana. 

In July 2025, Pirates confirmed an agreement for Nkota’s permanent transfer to Al-Ettifaq. The Saudi club provided him with an opportunity to test himself outside South Africa and in one of the continent’s rapidly developing leagues. 

Saudi spell interrupted by injury

Nkota initially made a promising start to life in Saudi Arabia, scoring on his Al-Ettifaq debut. He ultimately made 22 appearances during his first season with the club, scoring two goals and registering three assists, according to reports.

However, his progress was affected by a knee injury sustained in training, which required surgery and contributed to him missing South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.

The move back to Pirates, therefore, represents an opportunity for Nkota to regain his rhythm, fitness and confidence in an environment where he previously flourished. 

For Orlando Pirates, bringing Nkota back adds another dynamic attacking option to the squad. 

The winger already knows the club, its supporters and the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest teams. His pace, direct running, and ability to operate in wide attacking positions could give the Buccaneers additional options during the 2026/27 campaign.

A chance for a fresh start

Nkota’s return could prove beneficial for both player and club. 

For Pirates, it is the return of a player who made a major impression before his move abroad. For Nkota, it provides a familiar platform from which to rebuild his career after an interrupted spell in Saudi Arabia. 

At just 21, the winger still has considerable room for development. A successful season back in Soweto could put him firmly back in the Bafana Bafana conversation while also allowing Al-Ettifaq to see him return to his best.
