Self-proclaimed political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected back in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, as his fourth bail application continues amid allegations that he planned to escape from custody.

Mail & Guardian reported that the State previously told the court that Brown allegedly intended to disguise himself as a Correctional Services official and walk out of the court cells during his appearance on 20 August. The allegation was contained in an affidavit by investigating officer Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred Odendaal.
According to the affidavit, police were alerted to the alleged plan on the morning of 20 August. Additional security measures were subsequently put in place, including ensuring that Brown appeared in court wearing leg irons.

Court seeks Correctional Services report
Brown’s bail proceedings were postponed after the State was unable to produce a detailed report from the Department of Correctional Services regarding the alleged escape plan.
According to Algoa FM, the matter was postponed to 1 September to allow Correctional Services to provide the court with further information about the allegations.
The State is opposing Brown’s release and has previously argued that the alleged escape plan raises concerns about him being a flight risk if granted bail.
Brown is facing numerous charges and has made several previous attempts to secure his release. His latest bail application is being heard on new facts.
The alleged escape plan has added another layer to an already closely watched court case involving the businessman, who has featured prominently in allegations surrounding political interference and criminality in South Africa’s criminal justice system.
For now, the court is expected to consider the Correctional Services report and hear further arguments from the State and Brown’s legal team as the bail proceedings continue.
