Sydney shared the personal story during a recent livestream from her kitchen, giving viewers a glimpse into an experience that she says has stayed with her and shaped the way she thinks about safety.

Sydney recalled walking home from a nearby shop when a man attempted to steal her phone. She said the attacker physically fought with her and slammed her onto the ground during the robbery.

Tyla’s sister Sydney explained why she prefers living in the USA over her home country, South Africa, recalling a terrifying time when she was robbed and injured over her phone. ‘I was so scared’

Sydney explained that she was carrying a six-pack of Coke when the incident happened. She said she noticed a getaway car nearby, which made her believe the robbery may have been planned.

Despite being attacked, Sydney refused to let go of her phone and fought back against the man. She estimated that the attacker was around 24 or 25 years old at the time, while she was only 18.

Looking back on the incident, however, Sydney admitted that resisting the robber could have put her life at greater risk.

She questioned whether it had been wise to fight back, acknowledging that the situation could have ended much worse if the attacker had been carrying a firearm.

The experience shaped her view of safety

Sydney’s story came while she was discussing her experiences of living between South Africa and the United States. She explained that incidents such as the robbery contributed to her appreciation for the sense of safety she experiences while living in the US.

The story prompted discussion among viewers about crime in South Africa and the different experiences people have when living abroad.

Some people praised Sydney for standing up for herself during the attack, while others cautioned against resisting an armed or potentially dangerous criminal during a robbery.

The discussion also highlighted the difficult decisions people can face during violent crimes, where protecting one’s life may be more important than trying to hold on to possessions.

Social media reacts to Sydney Seethal’s story

The personal account quickly attracted attention online, with viewers discussing both Sydney’s experience and the wider issue of crime in South Africa.

Some praised her toughness and composure while recounting the incident, while others focused on the risks associated with resisting a robbery.

The story also sparked conversations about South Africans who live or spend extended periods abroad and how their experiences of safety can differ from those they had growing up in the country.

For Sydney, the incident appears to have remained an important memory, particularly as she reflected on how her experiences in South Africa compare with her life in the US.

More than just Tyla’s sister

According to Post, Sydney has built her own following as a digital creator, with content centred on lifestyle, travel and her everyday experiences. She has also appeared alongside Tyla in content and has accompanied her sister during parts of her international career.

Her candid approach to sharing personal stories has helped her establish an identity beyond being known simply as the sister of one of South Africa’s biggest international music stars.

This latest revelation has once again put Sydney in the spotlight, but it has also opened a broader conversation about crime, personal safety and the experiences of South Africans at home and abroad.

While the robbery happened years ago, Sydney’s decision to share the story now has resonated with viewers who have experienced or witnessed similar incidents.
