Sundowns begin title chase against TS Galaxy

Mamelodi Sundowns will finally begin their 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign when they travel to Mbombela Stadium to face TS Galaxy tonight, Tuesday, August 11.

The highly anticipated clash is scheduled to kick off at 19:30, with Sundowns looking to make a winning start to their title campaign. The fixture was moved into Sundowns’ opening league slot after their initial match against Marumo Gallants was postponed. 

For the Mamelodi team, the match carries extra significance. Sundowns will be determined to reclaim the league crown after Orlando Pirates ended their long-standing dominance last season. A positive start against Galaxy would provide an early boost as they look to challenge the title once again.

Will it be an easy match?

TS Galaxy always know how to give Sundowns a difficult test. The team has famously defeated Sundowns 3–2 at Mbombela Stadium in May, a result that dealt a major blow to their title hopes and helped hand the initiative to eventual champions Orlando Pirates. 

Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has acknowledged the challenge posed by Galaxy, stressing that his side must find a way to overcome an opponent that has consistently made life difficult for them in recent meetings. Sundowns lost twice to Galaxy in three encounters last season. 

Although Sundowns have enjoyed the better record in the league fixture, Galaxy’s recent performances have added a new dimension to the rivalry. The home side will also be eager to make a statement in front of their supporters at Mbombela Stadium. 

All eyes will therefore be on Mbombela tonight as Sundowns seek revenge, three points and the perfect start to their Betway Premiership campaign.
