How to curate a healthier social media feed

Social media can be a great way to stay informed, inspired and connected, but it can also leave you feeling overwhelmed or drained. The good news? You have more control over your online experience than you may think.

According to HP Psychotherapy, social media and mental health are deeply connected. As such, it’s worth being intentional about what you’re consuming. By making a few intentional changes, you can create a healthier social media feed that supports your mental well-being instead of harming it.

Follow accounts that add value

Take stock of the content you consume every day. Follow creators, organisations and brands that educate, motivate or genuinely make you feel good. If an account consistently leaves you feeling anxious, inadequate or angry, it may be time to unfollow, mute or hide it.

Diversify your content

Algorithms tend to show more of what you engage with, creating an “echo chamber”. Follow a mix of voices, interests and perspectives to keep your feed balanced. This could include fitness, travel, personal finance, local news, hobbies or positive lifestyle content.

Be intentional with your scrolling

Mindless scrolling can quickly eat into your day. Set screen time limits, avoid reaching for your phone first thing in the morning, and take regular breaks from social media to reconnect with offline activities. As reported by CNN, it also helps to have an idea of what you are looking for. That way, you can head straight to that particular profile or type of content, instead of wasting time being distracted or scrolling mindlessly.

Engage with positive communities

Look for groups and creators that encourage meaningful conversations, kindness and learning. Healthy online communities can provide support, inspiration and a sense of belonging without the negativity often found elsewhere.

Regularly review your feed

Your interests and priorities change over time, so your social media feed should too. Every few months, review who you follow, adjust your settings and remove accounts that no longer serve you.

Curating a healthier social media feed isn’t about avoiding reality; it’s about creating an online space that reflects your values, protects your mental health and helps you spend your time more intentionally.
