Modern life can place constant demands on the mind and body. Deadlines, family responsibilities, financial pressures, and endless notifications can leave your nervous system feeling overstimulated.

When this happens, you may experience stress, irritability, muscle tension, poor sleep, or difficulty concentrating.

While there is no instant ‘reset’ button, there are, however, simple daily habits that can help your nervous system shift from a heightened state of alertness to one that supports relaxation, recovery, and resilience.

Understanding your nervous system

Psychology Today says everyone is born with a biological survival system designed to respond to any environmental or psychological threat.

The nervous system is constantly processing information and responding to both internal and external stimuli. It is the first line of defence, working to protect us.

Before anything else, you need to understand your own nervous system to react accordingly.

Your nervous system controls how your body responds to both internal and external events. It has two key modes:

  • The sympathetic nervous system, often called the ‘fight-or-flight’ response, prepares your body to deal with challenges or perceived threats.
  • The parasympathetic nervous system, known as the ‘rest-and-digest’ response, promotes relaxation, healing, digestion, and recovery.

A healthy nervous system moves flexibly between these states. Chronic stress, however, can make it harder for the body to return to a calm baseline.

There are ways in which you can control or ease your nervous system:

  • By taking deep breaths
  • Some low-controlled movement
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Reducing your information overload
  • By having positive social interactions
  • Or even prioritising sleep

Resetting your nervous system isn’t just about eliminating stress; it’s about helping your body recover from it.
