While launching Nigeria’s community food bank, the country’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, called on Afrobeats superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and more to reach into their deep pockets and assist low-income Nigerians.

Nigerian First Lady mentions Burna Boy and more
Tinubu noted that while the country has many wealthy individuals, their priorities differ.
“I think it’s high time we started helping those who need help in the country. I want to appeal to our young ones in the entertainment industry. I’ve mentioned it before, and I will use Akon, a music icon who does a lot of great charity work,” she said.
“The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money. Good cars are good; a Maybach is good. Rolls-Royce is good, but you can still help. The burden on the government is huge.”

The richest Afrobeats artists
According to Yahoo Finance, the wealthiest star under the Afrobeats genre is Davido, worth $100 million, approximately R1.63 billion. Although the First Lady mentioned Asake as one of the wealthy Nigerian artists, taking second place is Wizkid, worth $30 million (approximately R500 million). Burna Boy takes the third position, with a net worth of R22 million (approximately R361 million).
Plea to Afrobeats stars causes a stir
Not many social media users were in favour of Tinubu’s comments, noting that it was unfair to rely on the artists to help support the country’s citizens.
“Publicly asking someone else to do your job for you is wild,” wrote @nworae_.
@s0psychedelic commented, “Aunty, please ask your husband and his friends before Asake and Davido.”
@nikefrancess laughed and asked, “Has she forgotten who her husband is?”
