Popular record producer DJ Maphorisa left the internet divided when pictures of himself reading a self-help book emerged on the internet. Social media users joked that the DJ’s thirst for knowledge was all thanks to controversial music executive Nota Baloyi.

The pictures showed that Phori’s books of interest were James Clear’s Atomic Habits and the 1937 classic Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. While Atomic Habits explores building good habits and breaking bad ones through small changes, Think and Grow Rich looks at obtaining life’s riches.

Some social media users felt that DJ Maphorisa was only reading the books as a jab at Nota. The media personality often criticised the star, who shared that he had not completed formal schooling.

According to TimesLIVE, the award-winning artist left school in Grade 11 when he got his first deal and pursued a career as a DJ. He once admitted that he struggled to read contracts.

Other internet users, including well-known figures such as radio personality Sizwe Dhlomo, stated that Phori reads a lot and described him as someone who is eager to learn.

@kfreshFADED jokingly stated, “Bro probably put the book down after seeing the word ‘effervescent’ and struggled to pronounce it.”

@Geezus_f commented, “Bro is actually kinda smart, so it’s not at all surprising.”

@Hlela_Lulubel added in the comment section, “Phori has been reading for the longest time. Yes, it might look like content, but he’s always hungry for knowledge.”

“Everyone should read these books,” insisted @saddworldd999.
