Emirates Brings Premium Economy To South Africa With Refreshed Boeing 777

by nikita.m

South African travellers now have a new way to fly long-haul. Emirates Airlines has officially launched its premium economy product in South Africa, making its debut on a refurbished Boeing 777 that will serve both Johannesburg and Cape Town routes.

A Milestone For Emirates In Africa

The unveiling of the cabin was marked with guided tours in both cities last weekend, attended by aviation leaders and tourism stakeholders, including Poppy Khoza, Director General of the South African Civil Aviation Authority. For Emirates, this rollout represents the first time its refreshed Boeing 777 has been deployed in Africa, underscoring South Africa’s importance to the airline’s network.

What Passengers Can Expect

The premium economy cabin is designed with comfort in mind, featuring 24 leather reclining seats that offer full leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, and a wood-finished cocktail table. Travellers can also enjoy in-seat charging points, large TV screens, pillows and blankets, complimentary amenity kits on select flights, and even a sparkling wine exclusive to Emirates.

The four-class Boeing 777 is fitted with 260 economy seats, 38 redesigned business-class seats in a 1-2-1 layout for added privacy, and eight first-class suites, giving South African travellers access to the airline’s latest cabin innovations.

Why It Matters To South Africans

Premium economy has become one of the fastest-growing segments in global aviation, filling the gap between economy and business class for passengers seeking comfort without paying business-class prices. For South Africans flying frequently to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, this move by Emirates provides a more affordable premium option on long-haul journeys.

Emirates’ Commitment To The Region

Afzal Parambil, Emirates’ Regional Manager for Southern Africa, highlighted the importance of South African travellers to the airline. “Over the years, we have built strong relationships with our customers and are proud to have a very high percentage of repeat passengers. The deployment of our refurbished Boeing 777 – our first in Africa – will further elevate the experience for these passengers, with the introduction of premium economy and our new business-class experience.”

With competition heating up among international carriers serving South Africa, Emirates’ introduction of premium economy is not only a win for travellers but also a sign of confidence in the country’s aviation and tourism recovery.
