Start the new season on a clean budget: Tips to spring clean your finances

Do you know that feeling you often get at the end of the year or each season, whereby you tell yourself that you want to start everything on a clean slate? That feeling of wanting to make room for whatever is coming next, believing that that would determine positive results, because no old rags were hanging around it. Does this sound familiar?

Well, it is also possible to apply that analogy with your finances. This can be achieved when you clean out your budget so that it’s fresh and ready for the next season. With spring around the corner, wouldn’t it be great if you performed a spring clean on your finances?

It’s considered a good idea to do so because according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this “can help you avoid late fees for past due bills, keep track of your spending and savings goals, and find important documents when you need them.”

You might be wondering how to do this effectively, this is how:

Look closely at past expenses: The Service Credit Union states that you must ensure your budget is balanced by reviewing your expenses and identifying overspending areas. “Look for recurring subscriptions or memberships that you no longer use and consider cancelling them to free up some extra cash in your budget.”

Negotiate bills: The above source further advises that you review monthly bills for cell phone, internet, or cable providers and inquire about discounts or promotions. It is said that you must ask for better rates, especially if you’re a loyal customer.

Automate savings and bills: According to Your Richest Life, you need to automate tasks like bill payments, savings, and investment deposits to streamline payments, cut late fees, and stay on top of goals. This is to avoid delaying your payments for later and end up having a huge and unmanageable bill. “You can automate bill payments, savings and investment deposits so your money will go exactly where you want it to, without you even having to think about it.”

Be organised: Filing taxes can test your financial organisational system, states the publication above.  It is mentioned that if you spend time searching for lost documents, consider rethinking your system. “If you wished you’d had a more precise filing method, an easier way to track expenses or better bookkeeping software, now is a great time to start putting those ideas into practice.”
