How to redeem yourself after loosing temper with your child

When it comes to parenting, there is no such a thing as a perfect parent.

If asked to recall, many parents are likely to share a time when they lost their cool, or a time their frustration levels shot up, leading to a regrettable reaction.

WebMD, a human health and well-being information hub states that a person may feel irritable and anxious before losing their cool. Other signs that you might need to check out for if you want to control your temper include:

  • Your heart rate speeds up.
  • Your skin starting to get warmer.
  • Your breathing pattern changes.
  • A clenched jaw.
  • Experiencing a tight chest.
  • A sudden upset stomach.

Recognise your triggers as a parent

Parents need to be mindful of what triggers their emotions leading to them losing temper, says parents empowering information hub with manageable tips, Empowering Parents. Once the triggers have been discovered, it becomes easy to find ways to avoid them or control their reaction to them.

Walk away from arguments with your child

The moment your temper starts rising and you sense you’re about to lose it, Empower Parents suggest you walk out of the conversation with your child. The information hub adds that, “not only does this prevent you from starting down the wrong path, but it also models for your child an appropriate response when they are feeling overwhelmed themselves.”

Calm yourself down before you take action

Whenever you find yourself angry, especially towards your child, you need to find ways to calm yourself down, adds mental health and behavioral science destination Psychology Today. “That deep breath is your pause button. It gives you a choice,” they add.
