Safety precautions when having a night out

As we approach the festive season, it is extremely common for people to want to enjoy a wonderful summer evening and have a night out with some friends, attend parties, festivals and partake in the good times.

For some, this is the perfect way of letting off some steam by forgetting about the year of hectic work, the pressures of life and just celebrating how far you have come by enjoying life.

While this is beneficial for your social life, it is important to take all precautionary measures to ensure that you do not expose yourself to harm.

According to the latest crime statistics provided by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the country faced continuously high levels of crime between January 2023 and March, some of the leading categories include murder at 6289, sexual offenses at 13 205, and hijackings at 5119 cases for those three months alone.

As the festive season approaches, it is therefore important to be alert and aware of one’s surroundings to limit the risk of being a victim of crime.

Here are some precautionary measures that you can take to ensure that you are safe at all times.

Consider reputable venues

Whether attending a social function or going clubbing, it is important that you find a place that you are well familiar with and has a high reputation for its safety.

Always move with a crowd

Having a group of people with you is one of the best ways to stay safe when feeling a bit drunk, never go to the toilet alone. Ensure that everyone leaves the venue at the same time.

Make transportation arrangements

When having a night out at the club, it is important to ensure that you have reliable transport to pick you up and take you home. Not only does this prevent you from drinking and driving but it ensures that you return home safely.

Never leave your drink unattended

Leaving your drink unattended could put you at risk of having your drink tampered with.

Learn self defense techniques

This is one of the best ways to ensure that you are protected in the event of a physical attack.
