Mzansi Magic has no plans to cancel Gqeberha: The Empire

The Eastern Cape based series Gqeberha: The Empire was rumored to not be returning for a second season. This was alleged by entertainment commentator Phil Mphela on his Twitter timeline.

The series started on a high with people looking forward to a different set up and a different storyline. Gqeberha: The Empire is centered around the character Luzuko Mxenge played by Mbulelo Grootbom who is married to four wives, Bulelwa, Zimkhitha, Nozuko and Anathi Mxenge.

Taking to his Twitter timeline the entertainment commentator shared the following:

“Gqeberha The Empire canned The Mzansi Magic telenovela based in the Eastern Cape will not be renewed for another season when its current one ends. While the show started off lukewarm, its ratings were actually improving, pulling around 650k viewers per peak episode,” wrote Phil.

Mzansi Magic has however disputed these rumors sharing a statement on their website that reads:

“The channel can confirm that Gqeberha: The Empire is scheduled to remain on-air for the foreseeable future. Plans are in progress for the next season, further detail will be communicated in due course.”

“Mzansi Magic has just been made aware of the allegations of mistreatment of cast, we take such allegations seriously and we will be reaching out to the production house to verify the same.”

“Gqeberha: The Empire has been welcomed by our audiences, as a great avenue to connect with beautiful region of the Eastern Cape and we are proud of what this project has achieved in this province.”
