Youth Day commemorates the anniversary of the 16 June 1976 Soweto uprising, a series of demonstrations and protests led by black South African school children in apartheid South Africa.

To honour the youth who bravely fought for what we can experience today, here are some youth-inspired activities that you can participate in.

Watch Youth Day-inspired movies

Sarafina! – You should without a doubt watch the iconic movie that is Sarafina! It is by far the go-to musical movie that greatly depicts South Africa’s history – the 1976 Soweto youth uprisings. The cast includes Leleti Khumalo who plays Sarafina, Whoopi Goldberg as Mary Masembuko, John Kani as the School Principal, Somizi Mhlongo as Fire and many, many more.

Cry Freedom – Starring Denzel Washington as Steve Biko, this movie is centred around the activist and his efforts to eradicate principles of discrimination that were based on race in the late 1970s in apartheid South Africa. The film was nominated for multiple awards, including the Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Attend Youth Day events

Don’t spend your Youth Day at home. Many provinces have special events lined up, such as the following:

Graceland – Youth Day Celebration: Enjoy the sound of DJs Ralf Gum, DJ Fresh and local DJs at the Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club in Secunda, Mpumalanga. More information can be found on Ticketpro.

Youth Day 2023 Bring & Braai: This fun event – for both friends and family – takes place at the Egoli Waterworld and Funpark in Klipriver, Johannesburg South. More information can be found on Webtickets.

Visit selected Iziko museums for free: Commemorate Youth Day by entering these Iziko museums for free – Bo-Kaap, Slave Lodge, Rust en Vreugd, Bertram House, Koopman’s de Wet House, South African Museum and South African National Gallery. Find more information about this activity on this link: https://www.iziko.org.za/events/youth-day-2023/.

Give back to the community

It is always enjoyable to give back to the community when you are with a group of friends. Whether it be dishing out soup during these cold, winter days or simply interacting with the youth, gather your besties and visit the nearest shelter, youth centre or community to provide those in need with a helping hand.
