Healthy boundaries to set in your relationship

In order for relationships to thrive, there are some important conversations you need to have as soon as you make it official.

The topic of boundaries is important to have in the early stages of the relationship so that you can be saved from a heartbreak down the road.

Every relationship needs healthy boundaries. Although your partner is your favourite person, there are simple do and don’ts that your partner should abide by. These boundaries will set the tone of your relationship, give a clear indication of the lines they should not cross and set the dynamics of the relationship especially in the early stages.

According to Help Guide, Healthy boundaries serve to:

  • Encourage autonomy and reduce co-dependent habits.
  • Set expectations when interacting with others.
  • Give you a sense of empowerment and self-respect.
  • Ensure your physical and emotional comfort.
  • Clarify individual responsibilities in a relationship.
  • Separate your wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings from those of others.

Here are a few examples of healthy boundaries to set in your relationship:

Communications style

It is important to talk to your partner about your preferred communication style. Tell them things like whether you like them to call or text, how often you need to hear from them, which pet names you like and which you don’t, etc.

How to handle conflict

People handle conflict differently; some people would rather give you the silent treatment whereas some would rather scream and shout at the top of their lungs. It is important to note that disagreements are inevitable and so, you need to know whether your partner needs time alone when they’re angry or they prefer to hash out your disagreement there and then.

Type of commitment

This conversation should be had right at the beginning, you do not want to just ‘go with the flow.’ Therefore, to avoid any misunderstandings, clearly state what you expect as far as your relationship is concerned. Will you be exclusive, or would you like an open relationship?

Personal space

Communicate with your partner if you need personal space, be open with them about what this means and what you require from them during this time. Will you share your ATM pin and passwords or not? If you have a journal, how will you feel if your partner reads it? Do you need a few minutes alone in the morning etc.
