All you need to know about microneedling

by Kwanele Mathebula
microneedling

Microneedling is the latest craze to hit the anti-aging scene. Since it is praised by experts as a non-invasive way of achieving younger-looking skin, we decided to take a deeper look at this transformational treatment.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a bunch of fine short needles to puncture the first layer of the skin. It’s mostly used on the face, décolletage and scalp but can be administered anywhere on the body. The treatment works to rejuvenate your skin by boosting collagen production (your body’s natural firming agent), which improves the appearance of wrinkles, acne, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and helps to combat hair loss.

How does it work?

The pricks from the needles cause slight injury to the skin which results in a huge boost of collagen and elastin formation as the body works to combat this ‘injury’. In addition a serum targeting pigmentation, acne or anti-aging is applied on the surface of the skin, thereby penetrating easily to the dermis and treating the targeted area.

Dr. Portia Gumede, aesthetic doctor at Dr. P Aesthetics Lifestyle Centre, says that it is safe to do micro-needling on dark skin.

How long before one can see results?

Within a week you will start seeing improved hydration of the skin. At the end of the treatment, clients have a smoother, firmer more evenly toned skin. Scars, large pores, wrinkles, and fine lines are markedly diminished. “At Dr. P Aesthetic Lifestyle we repeat the treatment 3 times, one month apart”, says Dr. Portia.

Post-treatment

A mask and post-treatment balm is applied immediately after the treatment to calm the redness on the skin. Avoid things such as a steam room or heavy exercise that might cause sweating. The aesthetic doctor will give you a list of products to avoid and what you can use from your own products for the next 3 days. Avoiding the sun is always mandatory for 3 days and the application of sunscreen at all times.

How much does it cost?

Treatment costs anything from R1600 per session. For more information, visit us here.
