How to identify the qualities that lead to promotion

by Chumasande Matiwane

Not everyone who works hard gets promoted, and not everyone who’s talented thrives in the role they’re in.

Career progression is more about structural fit: whether the qualities you naturally bring to work are the ones your environment rewards.
Sometimes, promotions are all about alignment. That’s worth paying attention to, because what holds most people back is misalignment.

While technical skills are important, several other key qualities predict whether you’ll move up the career ladder. Understanding these traits can, in turn, help you focus on what truly matters for advancement in your chosen career.

So, what are the qualities that could fast-track your promotion and improve career success?

According to GQ, these are some of the qualities you need to have:

  • You have high learning velocity

Learning velocity is an improvement on how quickly you absorb new information, apply it, and move forward, particularly in unfamiliar situations that may require pressure.

Qualifications or training hours don’t really factor much, as people who are eager to grow and improve aren’t the most experienced in the room. They’re the ones who ask the right questions, adapt quickly, and don’t need the same lesson twice. In fast-moving environments, that ability is worth more than almost any fixed skill set.

  • You’re known for something specific.

Professionals who typically advance the furthest in their careers are those who have a well-defined area of expertise. Being recognised for a specific skill makes it easier for others to support your advancement and less likely for you to be overlooked.

When someone is seeking a recommendation or considering opportunities, your supervisors will often mention the person who excels in a particular area. If there is a clear answer to the question of who is the best at something, you have established a strong professional identity.

  • You are reliable and consistent with performance.

When you consistently meet or exceed expectations, managers feel confident in your dependability, which is vital for promotion decisions. With such a mindset, promoting you becomes easier due to the results.
