Suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya is expected back at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court today, where he expects to have his formal bail application heard.

The 59-year-old has been in custody since his arrest on 21 September 2026. He is currently being held at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria while the court considers the next stage of his case.
Charges faced by Shadrack Sibiya
Sibiya faces five charges, including rape, trafficking in persons, promoting the sexual grooming of a child and two counts relating to the alleged sexual grooming of a child. The allegations involve an 18-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl.
According to the State’s case, Sibiya allegedly raped the 18-year-old at a Sandton hotel around May 2026. He is also accused of sexually grooming the 16-year-old between July and August.
Of course, these remain allegations before the court, and Sibiya has not been convicted of any offence.
eNCA reports that the National Prosecuting Authority has indicated that it will oppose bail.
Prosecutors previously raised concerns about the possibility of Sibiya interfering with witnesses and an alleged risk that he could evade authorities if released from custody.
Shadrack was previously arrested for his involvement with the Madlanga Commission’s Recommendations Task Team, formed to implement the commission’s recommendations.
His separate criminal case comes as he remains a central figure in the wider scrutiny of policing and alleged criminal infiltration within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Awaiting the court’s decision
For now, attention turns to today’s proceedings, with the bail application expected to determine whether Sibiya will remain in custody as the criminal case progresses or be released under conditions set by the court.
This matter is, however, being closely watched because of Sibiya’s senior position within SAPS and the serious nature of the allegations against him.
