The high-density raid, conducted under Operation Prosper and Operation Karabo, brought together specialised tactical teams from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Hawks, the Department of Home Affairs, and private security forces from Sibanye-Stillwater.

Addressing the media directly at the active crime scene, Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Fred Kekana confirmed the arrests alongside significant seizures of contraband and heavy weaponry.

Seizure of heavy arms, processing tools, and gold ore

During the intelligence-led sweep, law enforcement personnel disarmed multiple syndicate members and recovered high-caliber firepower, including an AK-47 assault rifle and five additional unlicensed firearms with live ammunition.

In addition to arms, tactical teams dismantled active refining sites, confiscating key industrial and specialised equipment used to extract gold:

  • Refining equipment: Multiple gas bottles, cutting torches, and custom-built motorised processing drums known as phendukas.
  • Contraband: Substantial quantities of unrefined gold-bearing material, raw gold ore, and specialised hand tools.

A significant portion of those detained were identified as undocumented foreign nationals. The suspects face an array of criminal charges, including illegal mining, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, unlawful possession of gold-bearing material, and contraventions of the Immigration Act.

Community relief countered by scepticism

While residents in the West Rand have welcomed the immediate presence of heavy military and police boots on the ground, community leaders emphasise that temporary raids only scratch the surface of a deeply entrenched problem.

Socio-economic analysts and local activists note that while frontline workers are routinely arrested in sweeping law enforcement operations, the international syndicates and financial kingpins funding the multi-billion-rand illicit trade often evade prosecution.

Communities continue to demand sustained military presence and systemic investigations to permanently dismantle the syndicates driving violence and lawlessness across Gauteng’s mining belts.
