A 25-year-old South African man has been arrested in Polokwane after law enforcement intercepted him driving a stolen silver Chery Omoda, valued at approximately R400,000, along the N1 highway.

Authorities confirm the vehicle was stolen in Sandton, Gauteng, and was being driven directly toward the Beitbridge Port of Entry with the intention of smuggling it out of South Africa.
The joint operation was carried out on Friday, 25 September 2026, by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Limpopo Provincial Tracking Team and Provincial Investigation Unit, alongside private security partners including ShadowSecure Security, Limpopo Tactical Security, and Tshimollo Security and Investigations.
A pattern of cross-border vehicle smuggling
Further background checks by police revealed that the suspect is a repeat offender. Just six months prior, in March 2026, he was intercepted at the Kranskop Tollgate driving a stolen Range Rover, also heading toward the Beitbridge border.
Following his March arrest, he was granted bail by the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court. During the Friday interception near Peter Mokaba Stadium, officers discovered that the driver lacked a valid driver’s licence and had fitted the stolen Chery Omoda with fraudulent registration plates.

The suspect faces multiple criminal charges, including:
- Possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle
- Driving without a valid driver’s licence
- Fraud relating to the use of falsified registration plates
He was scheduled to make his first court appearance at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 September 2026.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers welcomed the arrest, commending both the specialised police units and private security partners for disrupting organised vehicle smuggling syndicates operating along the N1 corridor toward provincial borders.
Ongoing investigations are underway to determine whether the suspect is connected to broader vehicle theft syndicates in Gauteng and Limpopo.
