According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the driver was operating a Toyota Etios when he responded to a ride request to collect a passenger on Maine Street.

Upon arrival, a female suspect allegedly signalled the driver and entered the front passenger seat. She then instructed him to wait for her brothers.

Two male suspects subsequently joined them in the vehicle.

Shortly after the second male suspect entered the car, one of the suspects allegedly engaged the vehicle’s handbrake while the group forcibly robbed the driver.

The suspects reportedly took an undisclosed amount of cash, the driver’s driver’s licence, identity document and bank cards.

During the incident, a fourth suspect who was standing outside the vehicle allegedly fired a gunshot and demanded the driver’s mobile phone.

However, the suspects fled the scene without taking the phone.
