Shoprite takes over Vida e Caffè, expanding empire

In a landmark corporate move that marks the end of an era for independent coffee culture in Mzansi, South African retail titan Shoprite Group has announced the 100% acquisition of Vida e Caffè.

The deal, signed in late August 2026, transfers ownership of the continent’s largest speciality coffee chain, comprising over 400 corporate and franchise locations, into Shoprite’s massive corporate ecosystem.

The announcement arrived alongside Shoprite’s 2026 financial results, signalling a major strategic leap by the retail giant into the fast-growing Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) and lifestyle food-service sectors.

From a Cape Town side street to a continental empire

Founded on Kloof Street in Cape Town in 2001 by Brad Armitage and Rui Esteves, Vida e Caffè introduced European espresso culture wrapped in vibrant Afro-Portuguese warmth. Meaning “coffee and life,” the brand quickly evolved from a single neighbourhood spot into a household name across South Africa and seven other African nations, including Ghana, Mauritius, Zambia, and Botswana.

Over its 25-year history, Vida pioneered versatile store formats, ranging from high-street locations and petrol station forecourts to corporate office bars, drive-thrus, and food trucks. The brand also expanded its portfolio by acquiring the fast-casual health eatery Sweetbeet in 2021, an asset that now falls under Shoprite’s umbrella.

Why Shoprite is stepping into the coffee cup

While Shoprite has long participated in food services through private labels, catering, and in-store partnerships, acquiring Vida e Caffè marks its official entry into running standalone, dedicated food and beverage chains.

Shoprite CEO Pieter Engelbrecht highlighted that Vida’s diverse customer demographic and flexible store formats provide an exceptional foundation for future growth.

“Vida is a business we greatly admire, and we look forward to learning from its success while supporting its next phase of growth,” said Pieter Engelbrecht, Shoprite Group CEO.

The move places Shoprite in direct competition with traditional QSR operators, combining the retail behemoth’s massive supply chain power, loyalty network, and real estate reach with Vida’s established lifestyle appeal.

What’s next for coffee lovers?

For regular patrons, the day-to-day Vida e Caffè experience is expected to retain the signature espresso, iconic red cups, and energetic service that built its legacy. However, industry analysts anticipate deeper integrations moving forward, potentially linking Vida to Shoprite’s digital platforms, such as Xtra Savings or Checkers Sixty60 delivery networks.

The acquisition remains subject to standard regulatory approvals and is projected to officially take effect during Shoprite’s 2027 financial year.
