Schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District are closed for today and tomorrow, Wednesday, 3 June and Thursday, 4 June, as a precautionary measure following severe weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Local government addresses decision to close schools
The Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, announced this decision after consulting with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. The decision was made in response to forecasts of heavy rainfall affecting the region, prioritising the safety of learners and teachers.
In a statement, Maynier said, “A decision has been taken to close schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, and Thursday, June 4, 2026. All public ordinary and special needs schools in Eden and Central Karoo Education District are affected by the closure, which is due to the heavy rainfall warnings for the area.”

The Department of Education emphasised that while closures are not taken lightly, safety remains the priority during severe weather events.
Other Western Cape schools in the clear
All other schools in the Western Cape will remain open unless individual closures are approved on a case-by-case basis. The department confirmed that, unless further notice is issued, all schools are expected to reopen on Friday, 5 June.
