Orania resident’s viral video of safe neighbourhood stuns SA

A man living in Orania showed the Northern Cape town’s calm and tranquil suburb as he walked the quiet streets. With houses that had no signs of fencing to keep unwanted visitors off the property, South Africans were stunned to see how safe the area was.

The origins of Orania

Orania, located along the Orange River, is a private, self-governing town with residents of Afrikaner ancestry. It was established in 1991 and operates independently of South African government funding and has its own currency. The residents’ aim is to preserve Afrikaner culture, the language, and self-determination.

The video attracted thousands of members of the online community to the comment section, who commented on how safe they thought the area was.

One person said, “There’s nothing negative about this community. In a state that fails to protect its citizens, service delivery failures, soaring crime rates, the citizenry has to look after themselves, like Orania did. And they did very well. Instead of criticising, communities must learn from this initiative. Well done and congratulations, Orania.”

Another comically stated, “No maphara. It’s so peaceful.”

“No walls, no electric fence, just pure peace of mind,” a Facebook user pointed out.

“I think we can all learn from Orania. People are disciplined and do not allow crime and corruption to take over their day-to-day lives. I can only wish,” shared another person with social media users.
