The 53-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing 21-year-old Tshepang Nyathi during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan, has abandoned his bail application.

The accused appeared briefly at the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court outside Pretoria on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, where he faces a murder charge. His decision means he will remain in custody while police continue their investigations.
Spring Day celebration turns deadly
The case stems from an incident on 1 September 2026, when a group of young people were celebrating Spring Day by splashing water on one another and people passing through Refilwe Extension 3.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the accused was walking past when members of the group allegedly attempted to pour water on him.
It is alleged that he then took out a knife and stabbed Tshepang. The young man was taken to a local clinic but later died from his injuries.
According to IOL, following the alleged stabbing, the accused was reportedly apprehended and assaulted by members of the community. He later sought medical treatment at Ekangala Hospital, where he was arrested.
The NPA has not publicly disclosed the accused’s identity.
The murder case has now been postponed to 27 October 2026 to allow for further police investigations, reported eNCA.

Family seeks justice
Tshepang’s family has been left devastated by his death. His aunt, Anna Nyathi, said the family had mixed feelings about the accused abandoning his bail application.
She said the family simply wants justice for their loved one and that seeing the accused in court remains emotionally difficult.
Tshepang’s burial is taking place on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, in Refilwe, Cullinan, reported SABC News.
The tragedy has also sparked renewed debate around Spring Day water-splashing celebrations and calls for greater regulation of the tradition.
