Let’s face it… No relationship is perfect, and arguments are bound to happen. After a clash with your partner, it’s important to rebuild trust and get back to that healthy position you were in before.

Rebuild trust in a relationship

Open communication about feelings and past mistakes is crucial, notes VeryWell Mind, adding that along with mutual commitment to growth and possible therapy, such an approach can assist in restoring trust that feels broken.

The wellness portal states that experts found that couples should address five key points to regain trust in one another:

  1. Knowing the details
  2. Releasing the anger
  3. Showing commitment
  4. Rebuilding trust
  5. Rebuilding the relationship

Psychology Today also lists three strategies to implement: compromise and collaborate, take responsibility for your part, and listen without defending.

1. Compromise and collaborate

Instead of focusing your energy on winning the argument, find a middle ground of respect and where partners feel heard. When both individuals are willing to compromise and collaborate, a relationship can grow stronger after a disagreement.

2. Take responsibility for your part

An important part of reconciliation, taking ownership of your mistakes shows maturity and signals the seriousness of repairing the relationship. Try to let go of the blame game and use the situation as an opportunity to consider how you might have acted differently.

3. Listen without defending

Another critical step in rebuilding trust is practising effective listening. Resist preparing a response while the other person is talking and focus on truly hearing what they have to say. Nonjudgmental listening promotes understanding and helps resolve conflicts more effectively.
