Things to consider before trusting someone with your hair

Your hair is more than just part of your appearance. It’s an investment in your confidence and self-care. Whether you’re booking a trim, colour treatment, protective style or silk press, choosing the right hairstylist can make all the difference. Before sitting in anyone’s chair, here are a few things worth considering.

Check their experience and portfolio

A reputable hairstylist should be able to showcase their work through photos or social media. Look for consistent results and styles similar to what you want.

If you have natural hair, pay attention to how they handle different curl patterns and textures, as healthy hair practices are just as important as beautiful styling.

Hygiene matters

Clean tools, fresh towels and a tidy salon are non-negotiable. According to Salons Direct, maintaining high standards of hygiene is vital to prevent the risks of cross contamination.

Hair equipment that isn’t properly sanitised can increase the risk of scalp infections or irritation. A professional stylist will always prioritise cleanliness and client safety.

Communication is key

A good stylist is open to understanding your hair goals before getting started. They should ask questions about your hair history, previous chemical treatments and daily routine. If they seem dismissive or rush through the consultation, consider it a red flag.

Read reviews and ask around

According to Elite Beauty Society, reviews are a great way for hairstylists to build trust. Word-of-mouth recommendations remain one of the best ways to find a trusted hairstylist.

Online reviews can also provide insight into customer service, punctuality and the overall salon experience. Look for recurring positive feedback rather than focusing on a single review.

Don’t ignore hair health

The best hairstylists care about the long-term health of your hair, not just the final look. They should recommend treatments only when necessary and avoid processes that could cause unnecessary damage. This is especially important for natural hair, which benefits from gentle handling and moisture-focused care.

Finding someone you trust with your hair takes time, but doing a little research beforehand can help you avoid disappointment and keep your hair healthy, beautiful and thriving.
