Shock – this is what’s left behind as members of the Rabie Ridge community try to come to terms with the passing of four toddlers between the ages of three and four years old.
According to news publication Daily Sun, the four toddlers died after being exposed to rat poison which found itself laying in close proximity to where the toddlers were playing.
Captain Nelda Sekgobela who is the spokesperson of the Ekureleni district police, told reporters that the children later began experiencing severe stomach pains and started vomiting before being taken to medical facilities, where they succumbed to symptoms.
In an interview with ZiMoja a neighbour who preferred not being mentioned said the following: “The child said they ate food they found in the house and minutes later, they started feeling sick. I heard one of them screaming and crying, calling for help and I decided to go check on them and found the poor kids rolling on the floor.”
While further investigations are underway, the community has now emphasised the importance of being mindful of the safety of children when disposing of hazardous materials.
“Discarding rat poison is dangerous. Children are naturally curious and can easily come into contact with such substances,” one resident said.
Others said that there is a great need for education on the safe handling and disposal of poison to prevent a similar incident from happening.
While investigations are underway, police have confirmed that there is no suspicion of foul play.
