Commuting in winter? Here are safety guidelines for dark mornings

As winter approaches many of us find ourselves commuting in the dark. Whether you’re heading to work or school, safety is important during these early morning hours.

Here are some essential tips to ensure you stay safe while waiting for public transport in the dark winter mornings.

Wear Reflective Clothing: Visibility is key when it’s dark. Wear reflective clothing or accessories like armbands or vests to make sure you are seen by drivers and other commuters.

Use a Flashlight: Carry a small flashlight or use the flashlight feature on your phone to light your way and make yourself more visible. This can also help you navigate uneven or wet surfaces safely.

Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, walk to your transport stop with friends, family, or colleagues. There’s safety in numbers and having someone with you can provide extra security and assistance if needed.

Establish a routine with your neighbours or coworkers to meet up and travel together, which can also make the commute more enjoyable. According to South African Police Services (SAPS) stay in populated areas, and avoid isolated stops or paths where there are few people around. Never walk around alone and don’t talk to strangers. Be on the lookout for strange cars or people.

Trust your instinct and have the contact information for local authorities and transport services readily available in case of an emergency. Knowing who to call can save valuable time if you need help.

For those who are using trains avoid sitting in a train carriage that is empty or nearly empty. Robberies and assaults are less likely to occur with a carriage full of passengers.
