While South Africa isn’t known for snowy winters, families don’t have to travel overseas to experience the magic of snow. Every winter, several parts of the country transform into icy wonderlands, offering children the chance to build snowmen, throw snowballs, and create unforgettable memories.

So, if you are planning a trip during these winter school holidays, these are some of the best places to explore for snow.

Where to find snow in South Africa

Drakensberg Mountains

Spanning multiple provinces, the Drakensberg Mountains are some of the most iconic and reliable places for winter snowfall. There are resorts such as Champagne Valley and Giant’s Castle that occasionally wake up under a blanket of snow, creating a magical setting for family holidays.

Besides the snow play, you and your kids can enjoy hiking, horse riding, birdwatching, and some cosy evenings by the fireplace.

Barkly East, Eastern Cape

Known for its cold winters and regular snowfall, Barkly East is another excellent family destination. Surrounded by mountains, it’s one of South Africa’s hidden gems during winter. When visiting with your kids, be sure to pack warm clothing and prepare plenty of outdoor fun in the snow.

Sani Pass, KwaZulu-Natal

Although known for warm weather, the northern parts of KZN can get snowy. One of South Africa’s most famous snow destinations, the Sani Pass, offers breathtaking mountain scenery and regular snowfall during the winter months. The winding mountain road leads to the highest snow sightings, making the journey just as exciting as the destination.

There’s no need for you to leave South Africa to experience the excitement of snow. Whether you’re exploring the majestic Drakensberg, venturing up Sani Pass, or discovering the snowy villages of the Eastern Cape, these destinations offer unforgettable family adventures during winter.
