Enchanting South African towns with timeless European elegance

Everyone deserves to explore the magic of European towns at least once in a lifetime. Fortunately for South Africans, we don’t have to travel to Europe to experience European elegance.

As reported by The South African, this can be attributed to our diverse scenery and incredibly rich history.

While local destinations can sometimes feel like they are being pushed toward international visitors, our country is indeed filled with beautiful towns which offer that old-world atmosphere without the passport stamp.

Visitors from around the world travel here for an escape, yet many South Africans overlook the gems right at our doorstep.

So, for anyone craving that European-style getaway, these towns will surely do the trick:

Dullstroom, Mpumalanga

Imagine you are high up in the Scottish Highlands with rolling hills and moody weather, well, Dullstroom comes close to that. At this beautiful destination, you can wake up in the heart of nature, surrounded by mist.

It is located in the north of Mpumalanga and is known for wide-open landscapes, with rugged beauty. From stone buildings to cosy pubs that fit the European Highland vibe, you’re in for a treat! As reported by Getaway, the cool climate and clean air give the illusion of being hundreds of kilometres away from any sign of city life, even though you’re only about 2.5 hours from Johannesburg.

Langebaan, Western Cape

Now think of Greece. Langebaan has that feeling. With its turquoise lagoon and stretches of white sand, Langebaan effortlessly fits the theme of the Greek Mediterranean.

When the days are sunny, the water in Langebaan shimmers with bright shades of blue, reminiscent of the Greek Isles. As the cherry on top, the whitewashed houses, fresh seafood, and a local coastal lifestyle complete the perfect picture.

Franschhoek, Western Cape

South Africa’s very own French corner, Franschhoek is deeply embedded in European heritage.

The destination is very beautiful and picturesque. As reported by IOL, the oak-lined streets and elegant architecture give it a refined, countryside-in-France atmosphere that feels indulgent yet close to home.

The town also has several wine estates, art galleries, and sidewalk cafés that feel like the mountainous ends of France. Undoubtedly, elegant architecture defines Franschhoek.

So if you’re one person after that European feel, South Africa is layered with beauty, history and atmosphere that all fit the European vibe.
