Red meat has remained the staple on many dinner tables worldwide, valued not only for its rich flavour but also for its nutritional contribution. Delve into some of the top reasons why red meat is beneficial for your health.

Red meat for the win

Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS), a service-driven organisation in the red meat industry, defines red meat as meat that is red when raw and darker after cooking. Common examples include beef (from cattle), lamb and mutton (from sheep), pork (from pigs), and game meats, such as venison (primarily from deer).

Besides providing key nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and niacin, riboflavin and B6, below are other reasons why red meat is good for your health.

  • Prevents iron deficiency: It is one of the best dietary sources of bioavailable iron and helps prevent fatigue, anaemia, and cognitive decline.
  • Supports muscle and bone health: High-quality proteins in some red meat supply essential amino acids that assist in muscle growth, tissue repair, and bone strength.
  • Boosts mental focus and energy: Red meat’s B vitamins and zinc help improve concentration, energy levels, and stress management.
  • Maintains hormonal balance: While in moderate amounts, healthy fats support hormone regulation and cellular function.

RMIS also notes that there are misconceptions about red meat that most people often believe, such as that plant protein can completely replace meat protein. These are some of the myths people should discard from their minds, and remember that a healthier approach is a balanced consumption.
