Potential health benefits of alcoholic beverages

When it comes to alcohol, not everyone has positive reviews of the drink. Heavy drinking of alcohol may not be the best idea for your physical health, but when consumed in moderation, it may present potential health benefits.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans state, “Moderate alcohol consumption is defined as having up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. This definition refers to the amount consumed on any single day and is not intended as an average over several days.”

It is important to note that the potential benefits vary based on an individual’s body makeup and type, advises Medical Daily – a publication comprised of professionals in journalism and medicine working together to make medical information accessible.

As you reach for your alcoholic beverage, take a minute to see below the potential health benefits it may have when drunk in moderation.

May help your brain

WebMD – a publication specialising in award-winning expertise in medicine – explains that a drink or two a few times a week may make you less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease. Drinking in moderation may also reduce the risk of getting a stroke and heart disease.

Makes you sociable

The above-mentioned health publication also notes that by having a drink or two with others, you are more likely to spend more time talking and keep everyone involved in the conversation.

May help strengthen bones

According to EatingWell – a publication that produces award-winning journalism about food, nutrition and sustainability – Taylor Wallace, PhD, CFS, FACN, a professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies at George Mason University, states that when moderately consuming beer, it tends to increase bone density, a valid biomarker for preventing osteoporosis.

Boosts your sex life

WebMD shares that one study found that women who had a couple of glasses of red wine a day noted that they had more desire, arousal, and sexual satisfaction than those who didn’t. While those who drank more reported no change. “A drink also may help raise a man’s testosterone levels, which makes both men and women friskier. But men who drink too much can lose the desire and the ability to have sex.”
