Colds and flus are common illnesses that often improve with rest, good nutrition, and supportive home care. While home remedies won’t cure a viral infection, they can help ease symptoms and make you feel more comfortable as your body recovers.

When you come down with a common cold or the flu, it can feel like the world is ending. While you may be miserable in bed with a stuffy nose, painful cough, and body aches, chances are you’ll feel better again soon if you just wait it out and rest.

In most South African homes, natural winter supplement regimens are embraced by using natural ways to boost one’s immune system. According to Dischem, these are some of the few natural ways you can treat cold and flu.

Herbal teas

These can be used to warm your body and defend your immune system. Herbal teas offer more than comfort in the colder months. These teas contain antioxidants that promote overall wellness and immune resilience. Teas include rooibos tea, hibiscus tea, ginger tea, and, most times, chamomile tea.

Using garlic

Garlic is commonly included in home remedies because it contains natural compounds that may support the immune system. Add fresh garlic to soups or meals for extra flavour and potential health benefits.

Taking vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in your body and has many health benefits. Adding fresh lemon juice to hot tea with honey may reduce phlegm when you’re sick. Most people in the country eat oranges with their peels for effective measures. While these drinks may not clear up your cold entirely, they can help you get the vitamin C that your immune system needs.

Steam inhalation

Incorporating steam in the recovery process is a staple in most South African homes. Breathing in warm steam with eucalyptus may help relieve nasal congestion and make breathing easier. Just take care to avoid burns.

Saltwater gargle

Another local remedy is to gargle with warm salt water several times a day to help soothe your sore throat and reduce irritation.
