Benefits of a social media detox

by Limpho Nonkonyane
UNSPLASH

Social media has become a significant part of our lives, as it is the medium through which news circulates.

Taking a break from social media can be challenging, particularly if you experience FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).

The information hub HealthNews suggests that the rise of digital media has transformed communication and sharing capabilities. However, this digital shift has severe consequences for sleep quality, attention span, and mental wellness.

According to the mental health information hub Greatist, licensed professional counsellor Leah Rockwell states that online platforms have harmful effects on mental health. She also believes that fear of missing out-driven attention may cause anxiety and despair. Social media addiction is a common occurrence as it engages the same part of the brain as other addictive behaviours.

A social media detox can assist individuals in resetting their habits and reflecting on how their online behaviour affects their mental well-being.

Greatist provides seven benefits of a social media detox:

  • Improves mood: According to studies by the information hub, taking a break from social media can help you feel better.
  • Boosts creativity: Eliminating social media can increase creativity and free up time for new activities.
  • Reduces FOMO: A social media detox can help you regain control of your life and focus on your activities.
  • Improves social ties: Disconnecting from social media can result in stronger in-person friendships.
  • Improves sleep quality: Research indicates that greater social media use leads to decreased sleep quality.
  • Reduces eye strain: Eliminating social media can help alleviate strain-related headaches.
  • Improves posture: By deleting social media, you can improve your posture and reduce neck strain.
