Eye make-up mistakes mature women should avoid

Your eye make-up might be doing more harm than good. Here are simple mistakes to avoid, for brighter eyes at any age.

Just like skincare, our make-up routines need subtle tweaks as we age. Techniques that might have worked in our 20s may now unintentionally age us. When it comes to eye make-up, small changes can make a big difference, so that natural features are enhanced. Here are common mistakes mature woman should avoid – and simple ways to fix them:

Using heavy or dark eyeliner

Thick, black eyeliner can be dramatic when you’re younger, but can appear harsh on older ladies, making the eyes look smaller. Instead, opt for a soft brown or charcoal pencil and apply close to the lash line. Smudge slightly for a gentle look.

Neglecting brows

Sparse brows can make the face appear tired. Use a brow pencil or powder to fill gaps to your natural shape. Avoid overly sharp lines; soft definition is key.

Powdery eyeshadows

Eyeshadow with a powder consistency tends to settle into lines and wrinkles. Rather opt for a cream eyeshadow, which is likely to stay all day long.

Incorrect concealer

Older women often deal with issues like pigmentation and dark circles, so colour correcting is vital. Choose a concealer with a shade lighter than your skin tone to avoid that washed-out look.

No eye primer

Another reason why make-up settles into creases is not applying primer. Choose a quality primer to create a smooth base for long-lasting make-up.

Mascara on bottom lashes

Bottom lash mascara can make the eyes look rounder and droopy, especially if you’re heavy-handed or use a dark mascara. This is not a complete faux pas, but apply with a light touch, or go with a brownish colour. If you find mascara draws attention to under-eye issues, rather focus on the upper lashes.

The key to eye make-up as you age is the less-is-more approach. It’s enhancing your natural beauty with strategic touches, so that the windows of your soul appear vibrant, alert and lovely.
